The waters of the Brunei River were the centre of angling activity, when over 130 fishing enthusiasts tested their skills in the 2009 “Fishing Challenge”. The competition took place along Jalan Residency between the Art Training Centre and the Brunei Handicraft Centre, Bandar Seri Begawan.
The Competition commenced at 8 in the morning and finished at 1 in the afternoon – and included individual and group challenges. Enthusiasts from all over the country, both men and women, came to compete. The Fishing Challenge was declared open by Municipal Board Chairman, Bandar Seri Begawan, Pengiran Haji Mohammad Ali.
The Competition was to mark the name change of Brunei Town to Bandar Seri Begawan, 39 years ago. It also aimed to foster closer ties between the community and the involved government agency employees. The competition was also to promote Bandar Seri Begawan as a visitor destination and a choice weekend recreation spot.
The fastest catch category was won by Dayang Hajah Tembaku binti Haji Basman, who caught a fish weighing 150 grams at 8.15 this morning. Meanwhile, Category for the longest fish was won by Awang Hairwan bin Haji Abdul Rahman, with his catch of white fish, measuring 42.5 centimetres long. Sambaran Group won the heaviest overall catch category, with their one thousand, eight hundred gram haul. Heaviest Fish Category was won by Ak. Mohamad Alif Azwan with his whopping 790 gram catch. Meanwhile, for the Special Category, Best Looking Fish, Awang Hairwan bin Haji Abdul Rahman came out tops. The Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs,Awang Haji Mawardi bin Haji Abdullah, gave away the prizes.
